Pre-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT)
How can I apply? At local authorities Request that your designated school official at your university recommend the OPT. Your DSO will make the recommendation by endorsing your Form I‑20. You have to apply for an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) with USCIS and seek permission to work. |
Application requirements Your job during your OPT needs to be related to the discipline you are studying and your education level. Before you can apply you first need to complete your first year of studies. You can't apply if you have completed 12 months of full-time Curricular Practical Training (CPT). |
Duration of work permit 12 months Your work permit will be valid for 12 full-time months, working off-campus. However, you can only work part-time with the OPT during your studies. If you still have unworked months when you graduate, you can complete those working full-time. You can apply for an extension of 24 months for your OPT if you are studying a STEM degree. |
